Cross CountryI have been involved in Cross Country from my sophomore to senior year. The Cross Country team this year has truly become a family to me. Not being able to run with them next year will be something I miss the most from high school. Track & FieldI have been involved in Track for four years; my events include the 100m dash, 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles and the 4x1 and 4x4 relay. I have qualified for the State Track meet in both my sophomore and junior years as well as earning a state medal in the 4x100 relay both years and breaking the school record in that relay. I will definitely miss running with and against all the great athletes on the team as well as having a great coaching staff to perform for throughout high school.

“Lord, what fools these mortals be!”
Four runaway lovers find themselves in the middle of a dispute between Oberon, the king of the fairies, and Titania, their queen. If that isn’t enough, a troupe of amateur actors are trying to rehearse a play for the dukes wedding. Between these unlikely groups flies Puck, the jester of the fairy kingdom, armed only with a wicked sense of humor and a love potion capable of making anyone fall in love with the first person they set eyes upon. What could possibly go wrong? The Wood River All-School Play Cast/Crew will perform one of Shakespeare’s most loved comedies, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Join us for a night of frivolity and fun! Performances will be Saturday, March 25th at 7 PM and Sunday, March 26th at 2 PM.
For three weeks, the personal finance class was given $200,000 fake cash and were sent out to "buy" five or more stocks to invest in. They had to make a spreadsheet and keep track of when they bought it, how much it was, the profit, and the loss. After three weeks, they recorded how much they gained or lost. The students used the MSNmoney website to check the stock prices each day.
My name is Jasmine Kennedy. This is my second year at Wood River Rural High School. Before that, I attended Shelton. My parents are Dan and Kristy Kennedy, and I have a little sister named Briana. When I was in kindergarten, we hosted a foreign exchange student from Germany who has become a big sister to me as well. She comes to visit us once a year, and I plan on visiting her in Germany one day.
I have participated in FBLA, STAND, and One-act crew. Outside of school, I participate in competitive dance with Just For Kix in Shelton. I've been dancing since 4th grade. This year I have been able to intern with the kindergarten class. I am also in my second year working at the Wood River After School program. My volunteer work provides great experiences for for my future career. After graduating from high school, I plan on going to a community college to get my general education credits done and then go to a state college or university to finish up my major in Early Childhood Education. My name is Norma Elizabeth Hernandez, and I am currently a senior at Wood River. My parents are Julian and Lucila Hernandez. I have a sister name Ruth, a half sister name Maria, and I also have a brother named Moises. During my high school career, I have participated in cross country, basketball, and track. I am a member of Spanish Club and FBLA. Throughout high school I've enjoyed getting to know the teachers most of all. The teachers have not only helped me academically, but in my personal life as well. I aspire to be a preacher.
One of my favorite things to do is preach the word of God. It is something that inspires me, and I love to inspire other people by sharing the love of Christ. Some day I have hopes of sharing my love for God around the world. Hi! My name is Ruth Hernandez. I'm 19 years old, and I'm a senior at Wood River High School. My dad’s name is Julian Hernandez. I have a full brother and a sister, Moises and Norma Hernandez. In some of my high school years, I did track and field, cross country, and some basketball. Some of the things that I also participate in is FBLA and Spanish Club. Overall, even though high school has been a challenge for me, I have really enjoyed learning new things for the long run. I know for sure that I will miss school, especially all my teachers. After high school, I plan to attend Central Community College to hopefully become a dental hygienist. After college? I don't know. I will have to wait and see what the future holds.

You know you’re getting a little long in the tooth when you still remember Prince’s song “1999” being a hit, and thinking how far off the year 1999 sounded. I will save you the time of looking it up….the song was released in 1982. We must be having fun, because time has sure flown since then!
The second semester of the school year has arrived and it won’t be long until we are setting up for graduation and planning for summer school. Each day, month and season seem to go by so quickly, and I’m sure we are guilty of not stopping to smell the roses when we have the opportunity. My goal for 2017 is to slow down and enjoy more of the little things that occur everyday in our school. I was recently reminded how great we have it, after watching a documentary on “The Blizzard of 1948-49” on Nebraska Public Broadcasting. The photographs that were shared and the stories told by those that experienced the long event are nearly unbelievable. An inch or two of snow makes me nervous now, so I just can’t imagine the hardships that were experienced in our state during that winter. My hope is that our snow that arrives this year falls on the weekend and melts before Monday, so that we avoid any snow days. But, if we do have a snow day anytime soon, be sure to make a cup of hot cocoa, put a blanket around yourself, and consider how blessed we are to live in Wood River, Nebraska. You might even kick up your heels and party like it’s 1999….again!!! Go Eagles!!! …..Dr. James Haley Seventh and eighth grade math classes have been busy preparing for holiday shopping and how to figure out all those “fantastic” discounts. Percents, fractions, and decimals were all incorporated into our learning of the skills. Working on computing what we would save for different percentage discounts, we also then were able to evaluate whether the sale price was really a super deal. Tax percentages were also added to our sale price to figure the total price. Further challenges included finding the percent of discount they were given if they knew the original cost and the sale price. Vocabulary words galore were utilized to help us in our solving. After vacation students were eager to share an abundance of additional ways we utilized our math talents during the Thanksgiving break.
Finally after completing problems of increase and decrease of sales, we are moving on to using fractions, decimals, and percents in other areas such as probability, comparing which is greater or less, and simple interest. If you have had a chance to ask our Juniors how school is going, they might have told you the good news about state testing this year. Instead of taking the NeSA tests in writing, reading, math and science, they will now take the ACT. The ACT is the most commonly used college entrance exam. It is a about a 4 hour assessment made up of multiple tests in English, Reading, Math, Science and Writing. In the past, students in their junior or senior year would have to pay $42.50 to take the ACT on a Saturday in Grand Island. Now, because of the change in the law, the 11th graders across the state will be able to take the ACT at their own school, during the day, at no expense to them. They will also be able to send the results to colleges that they are interested in attending. Our teachers have been preparing the students to take the ACT between April 19th and May 3rd. Prior to taking the test, the juniors will be taking the popular John Baylor prep course. The teachers will also have access to the ACT Online Prep to aide in preparing the students. We look forward to the challenge of having all of our students take the ACT this school year. If you have any questions at all about the ACT, state testing or anything at all please feel free to contact Mr. Zessin at the high school 583-2249.
Hi everyone! I'm Sarah Maginnis and am the new resource teacher at WRRSD. I LOVE being a part of Wood River and am ambitious to see what the year brings!! You will find me in room 130 Monday through Friday teaching math and language arts. Some things about me: I grew up in Odell, NE (a town of 300 south of Beatrice on the Kansas boarder) I graduated from UNK last year with a degree in high school special education and elementary special education. I'm from a family of 5 and we name all of our cars, which I reference in the classroom often. Math was my favorite subject in school. I am passionate for Autism Speaks and the Alzheimer's Association and love coordinating fundraisers for the foundations! I like messages like this: I am very close with my siblings, so they have the honor of being in my "Featured Teacher" post. I am looking forward to meeting you!
In honor of Veteran's Day, the fifth grade class prepared some facts and poems to read at the Veteran's Day program. Each student also colored part of a box that they stacked together to create an American flag. They worked very hard on this and were excited to share with all the veterans that came to our program. Good job 5th graders! The Wood River High School Volleyball team had a total of 19 players this year. The Lady Eagles off-season training began in June with strength training three mornings a week. Players also participated in a weekly team league held at Wood River on Tuesday evenings and at GISH on Thursday evenings. The JV and Varsity teams played in two team camps at Aurora and Ord. The Varsity was also a part of the Kearney Team Camp. Wood River held their own elementary volleyball camp for girls entering grades 1st-8th grade. This was a great opportunity for the high school players to mentor and teach the Little Eagles.
The regular season kicked off on September 1st. The Varsity team concluded their season with a 10-19 record. The JV went 5-5 with the Freshman team earning one win and two losses during their season. The Eagles would like to thank the community and school for their support at our home and away matches. Every single player improved their skills through hard work, dedication and teamwork. The program looks to continue to improve and we are already looking forward to another season. Go Lady Eagles! Hi, my name is Kinsley Forbes, and I am 17 years old. I have one full brother, Koltyn; two step brothers, Evan and Ayden; and a half sister, Mara. Throughout high school, I have participated in FBLA, HOSA, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and Freshmen 7. After graduation, I am going to attend the University of Nebraska - Lincoln to major in something in the medical field. Although I am not 100% positive, some of my interests are nursing, physical therapy, and pediatrics. I am excited to see where my future takes me.
My name is Lizzy Gannon, and I am a senior at Wood River. I was involved in volleyball all four years of high school. I was also involved in various music organizations, such as choir and show choir. I also participated and had leads in two school musicals: Annie and The Sound of Music. I auditioned for UNK Honor Choir which consists of the Festival Choir, the Women's Choir, and the Honor Choir. I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Honor Choir and hope to be selected again this year. I am involved in many organizations such as FBLA, Spanish Club, Letter Club, Student Council, and I am a freshman 7 leader. I am also president of Spanish Club and Letter Club. I am also very focused on my academics, and I have made the honor roll every semester. For college, I plan to attend a four year university in Nebraska and pursue a career in elementary education. On Thursday October 27th, 34 FBLA members participated in the annual Halloween for the Hungry. Every year, students go door to door asking for food items to be given to the local food pantry. The students loved helping out with this project, knowing that they are helping out people in our community. After we were done, pizza was served to the hardworking students. We would like to thank everyone who donated this year.
My name is Michael Fines. My parents are David Fines and Dawn Fines, and I have one older sister named Ana and three older brothers named Dakota, Taylor, and Jacob. Our girls have been very busy this year! Our season started in the first full week of June. We invited alumni back to help our girls prepare for the season. Thank you to Mady, Kassey, Jessica, Gina, Cheyenne, Dani and Hannah for coming back to help us out. This summer we also went to spend a Friday in Lincoln at the Nebraska Cheer Center. We learned more about stunting, jumping, and many more things. We had a lot of fun at this camp.
Right before school started these ladies started to prepare for color guard at band camp. We marched with the band in 3 different competitions this year. Our competitions were UNK Band Day, Harvest of Harmony, and Hastings Melody Round Up. At UNK Band Day we were first place in class C and at Harvest of Harmony were were in a three way tie for 7th place out of 40 some band. At the beginning of the year we had a little girls camps and performed at the fun fest. The girls always love this camp. It is so fun to work with our future spirit squad members. We went to the state fair the week after fun fest where we had a strolling performance around the fairgrounds and performed on Bristol Windows Stage with the rest of the squads there. We look forward to seeing all during the rest of football, volleyball, and basketball season. Go Big Purple!

There is no place I would rather be than in an elementary school. Where else do you get hugs, tears, happy stories, sad stories, your hand held, and smiles multiple times every single day? Where else do you experience the ever-changing world of education with eager minds? Where else do you easily see physical and educational growth in K-5 children on a regular basis? Sharing experiences with elementary children every day is such a blessing. Thanks for letting me be a part of your child's educational experiences. I have three daughters, three son-in-laws, and four grandchildren, and oh, do I spoil those grandkids! I enjoy reading, quilting, running, and spending time with family. I make a gingerbread creation each year for Christmas and always take my creation to school for students to view. Of course I am a Husker fan, but during basketball season I am a Kansas Jayhawk fan. "Go Big Red" and "Rock Chalk, Jayhawk" are two of my favorite phrases!! I am excited to share my experiences and vision for Wood River Elementary with the Wood River school and community. Drop in to say, 'hi' and introduce yourself. You are always welcome! |
