You know you’re getting a little long in the tooth when you still remember Prince’s song “1999” being a hit, and thinking how far off the year 1999 sounded. I will save you the time of looking it up….the song was released in 1982. We must be having fun, because time has sure flown since then!
The second semester of the school year has arrived and it won’t be long until we are setting up for graduation and planning for summer school. Each day, month and season seem to go by so quickly, and I’m sure we are guilty of not stopping to smell the roses when we have the opportunity. My goal for 2017 is to slow down and enjoy more of the little things that occur everyday in our school. I was recently reminded how great we have it, after watching a documentary on “The Blizzard of 1948-49” on Nebraska Public Broadcasting. The photographs that were shared and the stories told by those that experienced the long event are nearly unbelievable. An inch or two of snow makes me nervous now, so I just can’t imagine the hardships that were experienced in our state during that winter. My hope is that our snow that arrives this year falls on the weekend and melts before Monday, so that we avoid any snow days. But, if we do have a snow day anytime soon, be sure to make a cup of hot cocoa, put a blanket around yourself, and consider how blessed we are to live in Wood River, Nebraska. You might even kick up your heels and party like it’s 1999….again!!! Go Eagles!!! …..Dr. James Haley Hi everyone! I'm Sarah Maginnis and am the new resource teacher at WRRSD. I LOVE being a part of Wood River and am ambitious to see what the year brings!! You will find me in room 130 Monday through Friday teaching math and language arts. Some things about me: I grew up in Odell, NE (a town of 300 south of Beatrice on the Kansas boarder) I graduated from UNK last year with a degree in high school special education and elementary special education. I'm from a family of 5 and we name all of our cars, which I reference in the classroom often. Math was my favorite subject in school. I am passionate for Autism Speaks and the Alzheimer's Association and love coordinating fundraisers for the foundations! I like messages like this: I am very close with my siblings, so they have the honor of being in my "Featured Teacher" post. I am looking forward to meeting you!

Throughout high school, I have participated in FBLA, HOSA, National Honor Society, Spanish Club, and Freshmen 7. I also have played volleyball all four years of my high school career, and I've earned a letter three of those four years. After graduation, I am going to attend the University of Nebraska - Lincoln to major in something in the medical field. Although I am not 100% positive, some of my interests are nursing, physical therapy, and pediatrics. I am excited to see where my future takes me.
My name is Lizzy Gannon, and I am a senior at Wood River. I was involved in volleyball all four years of high school. I was also involved in various music organizations, such as choir and show choir. I also participated and had leads in two school musicals: Annie and The Sound of Music. I auditioned for UNK Honor Choir which consists of the Festival Choir, the Women's Choir, and the Honor Choir. I was fortunate enough to be selected for the Honor Choir and hope to be selected again this year. I am involved in many organizations such as FBLA, Spanish Club, Letter Club, Student Council, and I am a freshman 7 leader. I am also president of Spanish Club and Letter Club. I am also very focused on my academics, and I have made the honor roll every semester. For college, I plan to attend a four year university in Nebraska and pursue a career in elementary education. On Thursday October 27th, 34 FBLA members participated in the annual Halloween for the Hungry. Every year, students go door to door asking for food items to be given to the local food pantry. The students loved helping out with this project, knowing that they are helping out people in our community. After we were done, pizza was served to the hardworking students. We would like to thank everyone who donated this year.

I work at Carlos O'Kelly's as a line cook. My favorite memory at WRHS is leaving everyday, and what I will miss most about this place is how the lack of windows and a faulty AC system make this place feel like a prison in Siberia.

On Tuesday, the 27th of September, 9 members of the Wood River FBLA chapter participated in the annual Fall Leadership Conference in Kearney. Josh Erikson was the keynote speaker this year. He talked about empowering young people to be an active leader in their community. After the speaker, they split up to participate in workshops to help build new skills. In the afternoon, they had a choice of what leadership workshop they went to. The majority of students from Wood River went to "The Art of Communication: Leaving a Legacy" workshop. The leaders of the workshop were State President Ojus Jain and the State Vice President John Willey. All of the students will take the skills they learned and apply them to our FBLA chapter.
High School Social Studies at Wood River Rural is taught by Mr. Benjamin Egger, a 29 year veteran here at Wood River. Mr. Egger’s classes consist this year of Political Science, World Geography and American History from the progressive to the present. The Social Studies is an online curriculum by TCI company “created by teachers, for teachers, which believe the best teaching marries great content, meaningful technology and interactive classroom experiences. The end result, students of all abilities and learning styles succeed”. Highlights covered thus far this year: Political Science students were asked the essential question, how should political and economic power be distributed in a society? This question was answered by a Response Group activity, students participate as representatives at a constitutional convention charged with creating a stable government and economic system for a fictitious country that has just achieved independence. World Geography students were asked the essential question, why do geographers use a variety of maps to represent the world? Students answered this question with a Visual Discovery activity, in which students learn to read and analyze six types of thematic maps that geographers use to represent the world. Using six different world maps, students learn how to get information about physical features, climate, vegetation, population density, economic activity, and regions. They read about the maps and their legends, took notes, and dramatize three of the maps. Students then applied their understanding by using all six thematic maps to create a poem about a country of their choice. American History two essential question were asked. First, who were the progressives and how did they address the problems they saw? This question was answered with a Visual Discovery activity, students examine historical images to evaluate the actions taken by progressives to address problems of the early 1900s. And second, how well Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft and Woodrow Wilson promoted progressive goals in national policies. In a Response Group activity, students answered this question by debating the roles of Roosevelt, Taft and Wilson who deserves the most credit for promoting progressive goals.

Hi I'm Knox Arnett; I have a older sister and younger brother. I am a seventeen-year-old senior at WRHS. I plan on going to Hastings CCC for an associate's degree in manufacturing.
My name is Dean Luehr and I have been a director on the Board of Education at WRRSD for 2 years now. I initially ran for the board with the goal of helping WR be the best school possible in academics, fine arts, athletics and actually in every way possible while carefully monitoring our expenses to keep the tax levy as low as possible for our patrons.
I graduated from Wood River in 1986 (see attached photo); the third of five children of Loyd and Judy Luehr. My parents and my four siblings are all alumni of the Eagles. I walked on with the Husker football team at UNL while majoring in Education with a double endorsement in Math and Physics. After graduation I returned home to farm and raise pigs with my Dad. I married my High School and College sweetheart Becky Bolli (see attached) from our Loup-Platte conference foe Burwell Longhorns. We now have five children (attached) of our own who all attend or have graduated from Wood River. They are as follows: Matty (the trailblazer) is 19 and a Sophomore at Concordia University; Sam (the peacemaker) is 18 and a Senior at WR; Elle (the volcano) is 16 and a Junior at WR; Gideon (the heart of gold) is 14 and a Freshman at WR; and Josh (the culture changer) is 10 and a 5th grader at WR. I believe Wood River has some of the best overall facilities of any school our size. We also have an excellent staff of professional educators who have the district’s students’ best interests at heart. We have an excellent food service program, a great office staff, fantastic custodial staff (the cleanest facilities of any school district bar none), and wonderful para-professionals and aides to assist our teachers to teach at their best. If there is one thing I would like to see continual improvement for Wood River it would be CULTURE. I will provide you two examples of what I mean by “culture change”. First, Wood River school system gives groups of people privileges that are neither earned nor merited in any way but are based solely on chronological age. We see this in every facet of school life from our seniors always going first in the lunch line (they will even bypass younger students who have been waiting in line for a period of time), to our seniors cutting to the front of the line for school physicals (showing no sense of leadership as a TRUE leader always makes sure those under them are taken care of first). This type of “culture” fosters an environment not of respect, but of bullying. The seniors constantly remind the juniors of their comparative status as being a step below. Of course the juniors then showcase their superiority to the sophomores, and so on. This culture does not develop leadership, but an attitude of entitlement. Seniors know they don’t have to work for or earn their spot at the top because it will just be given to them regardless due solely to their age. That is true entitlement thinking. This culture does not build unity among different grade levels, but instead creates segregation and disunity as each class can hardly wait for their turn to bully the grades below them. This type of culture poisons the school from the inside out and affects all facets of student life. Second, as we are now fully engrossed in the social media age nation-wide, far too much of our school system from staff to students are persuaded by narcissistic thinking. We are immersed in 1) Facebook (I want you to know what I’M doing); 2) Twitter (I want you to know what I’M thinking); and 3) Selfies (I want you to be able to see ME). All of these tools, while not necessarily bad in their own rite, showcase a completely “inward” focused culture. I would like to see the Wood River school system transition to 1) (how are YOU doing today?); 2) (what do YOU think about this subject?); and 3) (how can I make YOUR life better today?); which is an “outward” focused culture. An outward focused culture in a school system will cause a tidal wave of upward movement in academics, fine arts, athletics, and every other area in our school system. I love Wood River and I want to see us continue our tradition of excellence in all areas of our school system, and we can only do that with a change from our current culture. I want the absolute best for our students and staff while carefully utilizing our tax dollars provided by our patrons. I am hoping for 2016-2017 to be Wood River’s best year ever!!! Hi, I'm Zachary Archer, and I'm 17 years old. I have participated in football, basketball, and track throughout the years. The thing I enjoy most is eating, and my favorite place to eat is Buffalo Wild Wings. After high school, I will go to college, but I am still undecided on where I will attend college and what I will major in.
On September 6th, eighteen of the Wood River FBLA members participated in adopt-a-highway. They spent an hour of their day off cleaning up along highway 30. This is a great way to give back to our community by making the sides of the road cleaner. Afterwards, pizza and pop was served to the hard-working students.
The Business Education Department is offering the following classes this year: Periods 1 and 8 Information Technology I, II and Period 2 an Independent Study Class of Information Technology I.
