About MeMy name is Haley Jo Parlin (or Bean), and I am a senior at Wood River High School. I'm the daughter of Bobbi and Darren Parlin and older sister of Faith and Abby Parlin. I've lived in Wood River my entire life and can't imagine growing up anywhere else. Most of my family lives in Wood River or very near it, and I am thankful for that because it allows us to be as close as we are. I take school very seriously and have been on every honor roll and been in the top 10 students of my class every time possible. Next year I plan on attending the University of Nebraska at Kearney, but have not yet decided on a major. All I know is I want to be in a job that allows me to help people and make them smile everyday. ActivitiesThroughout my four years at Wood River I have been involved in many activities and organizations. I played volleyball for all four years and basketball up until my senior year. I am FBLA Vice President, Student Council Vice President, and NHS president. I am also involved in Spanish club, letter club, and freshman 7 mentoring. Because I love to write I have been a part of Journalism throughout high school, and I am now one of two Copy Managers. This year I am one of the Leads in the All school play. I also sing in the choir at my church and teach a Fifth Grade Sunday School class. Music Music is my passion and I have been actively involved in music all four years of high school participating in choir, show choir, and being the Drum Majorette in Band. I had the privilege of making all three of the possible choirs for the UNK choir festival at some point. I made the Women's Choir my sophomore year, the Festival Choir my junior year, and the Honor Choir my senior year. I also went to the Doane Honor Choir this year and had a blast. I was part of two musicals, Annie and the Sound of Music, and had leads in both. FavoritesFood: Mashed Potatoes

Jeremiah 29:11 My name is Samantha Luehr, and I am a senior at Wood River Rural High School. My relationship with Jesus Christ defines who I am as a person. I both value and love the fact that Jesus is Lord of my life. Without Him, I would be utterly lost. My family holds a very special place in my heart as well. My father, Dean, is a pig farmer that has a passion for Christ and for providing for his family. My mother, a physical therapist, creates a loving home with her continuous care, and she makes the most delicious food! I have four siblings: Matty, the oldest, attends Concordia University and is getting married this April. Elle, my younger sister, loves to talk to people, and she is currently a junior in high school. Gideon, a freshman in high school, is growing like a weed at 14 years of age. Joshua, a fifth grader, adds life and drama to the family with his never-ending energy and volume. Madoc, my black, white, and brown Welsh Corgi, completes the family with his adamant love for chasing birds (I also have a ton of cats). As a student of Wood River, I am very involved in many different clubs, sports, and organizations. I play three sports: volleyball, basketball, and track. I am involved in FBLA, National Honors Society, FCA, Freshman 7, Band, and the All School Plays and Musicals. For four years I have been the FCA leader of the Leadership Team, and I have had the fortunate opportunity to help the Freshman form healthy habits through the Freshman 7 program this year. For three years, I have been the Stage Manager for the All School Plays and Musicals, but this year, I plan to step out from behind the curtain and act on the stage itself. Last year, I had the opportunity to be a part of the Youth Leadership of Tomorrow Program (YLT), and I graduated this program in June of 2016 in the Class 19. After high school, I plan to attend Concordia University with my sister Matty. I am undecided on what I would like to study, but I am confident that I will find my passion in college. While attending Concordia, I plan to play on the Concordia Women’s Basketball team. Finally, I enjoy working on the pig farm with my Dad. For the past two summers, I had the opportunity to work full time alongside my Father on the farm. Although many tasks were both physically and mentally challenging, I thoroughly enjoyed the experiences that I had on a day to day basis. Pigs are now my favorite animal. My favorite part of farm work is being able to see the glorious sunrises and sunsets come and go with their blazing color. Ultimately, I am ready to take the next step in my life, and I am excited for the opportunities and experiences that God has for me in this new world of college.

Cross CountryI have been involved in Cross Country from my sophomore to senior year. The Cross Country team this year has truly become a family to me. Not being able to run with them next year will be something I miss the most from high school. Track & FieldI have been involved in Track for four years; my events include the 100m dash, 100m hurdles, 300m hurdles and the 4x1 and 4x4 relay. I have qualified for the State Track meet in both my sophomore and junior years as well as earning a state medal in the 4x100 relay both years and breaking the school record in that relay. I will definitely miss running with and against all the great athletes on the team as well as having a great coaching staff to perform for throughout high school. For three weeks, the personal finance class was given $200,000 fake cash and were sent out to "buy" five or more stocks to invest in. They had to make a spreadsheet and keep track of when they bought it, how much it was, the profit, and the loss. After three weeks, they recorded how much they gained or lost. The students used the MSNmoney website to check the stock prices each day.

On Tuesday, the 27th of September, 9 members of the Wood River FBLA chapter participated in the annual Fall Leadership Conference in Kearney. Josh Erikson was the keynote speaker this year. He talked about empowering young people to be an active leader in their community. After the speaker, they split up to participate in workshops to help build new skills. In the afternoon, they had a choice of what leadership workshop they went to. The majority of students from Wood River went to "The Art of Communication: Leaving a Legacy" workshop. The leaders of the workshop were State President Ojus Jain and the State Vice President John Willey. All of the students will take the skills they learned and apply them to our FBLA chapter.
On September 6th, eighteen of the Wood River FBLA members participated in adopt-a-highway. They spent an hour of their day off cleaning up along highway 30. This is a great way to give back to our community by making the sides of the road cleaner. Afterwards, pizza and pop was served to the hard-working students.
