National Honor Society

This past weekend Mr. Freeling and I enjoyed spending part of our day with some amazing kids volunteering our time to help out at Race For Grace in Grand Island. We helped to ensure the "In Honor of " cards could be easily found by the family members who care and love those who suffered or are suffering with cancer. This involves taking the cards down, carefully removing tape, organizing according to alphabetical order and storing them in a box so that they can be picked up at a later time. Sometimes people came by in the middle of the process and asked us if they could have a card or cards. The kids loved searching through the countless piles finding the names because they witnessed the peace and comfort it brought when handing the cards  back to them. The kids worked fantastic together; like a fine tuned machine on an assembly line. Super proud of them. Below are some pictures of them working. Pictured are Mr. Freeling, Kaitlyn Thesenvitz, Haley Parlin, Nate Bahe, Kassandra Wetovick, Emily Loy, and Samantha Luehr.

The Wood River FBLA Chapter celebrated FBLA week by promoting "Money Smart Week".
Each day new flyers of tips on why to save, how to save and where to save are presented to the students.  Trivia questions are then asked over the intercom on the information presented.  The FBLA officers passed out locker treats to the student 6-12 and served the faculty and staff a continental breakfast on Wednesday.

One Act 2014

This last Tuesday, December 2 the Wood River One Act team finished their season at Districts, traveling to Cross County where they finished on a high note.  The play received the highest rank it could- a superior. We also received five outstanding actress awards. Those awards went to Matty Luehr, Jordyn Leffler, Kaylee Reimers, Sloane Tiarks and Jessica Rauert. “The kids did a great job. I felt it was their best performance of the year. I’ll miss them. They were a great group to work with.”

The One Act team began their season at Ord with the Chanticleer Festival. Here the judges spend extra time critiquing the team instead of ranking them. It’s a good place and time to get some quality feedback. Two judges spent 30 minutes talking to each actor and actress about what they could do to better themselves. Although there was no ranking of the plays, outstanding actor and actress awards were given to each team and Wood River had five. Those five were Matty Luehr, Jordyn Leffler, Sloane Tiarks, Eric Winfield and Kaylee Reimers. We were given some good comments, many regarding the set which our art department was so generous to paint for us. “The set was truly amazing. Mrs. Wiseman and the art students put a ton of work into it and we got nothing but oohs and ahs all season long.”

After performing for the Wood River community on November 17, the One Act took their talents to the Conference meet at Ravenna on November 24. “This meet is always so competitive. The judges always tell us how this conference is the toughest in the state and it is.” Although we didn’t come away a winner, we did do very well. We walked away with five outstanding actor and actress awards. Those awards were won by Matty Luehr, Jordyn Leffler, Kaylee Reimers, Sloane Tiarks, and Dakota Schroll. ‘The kids did a good job. We still can improve but we stepped it up from where we were at Ord.” The play itself received a superior rank, which is the highest rank a judge can give.

“I really enjoyed this year. The kids were so workable and wanted to do well. I will miss the times I had with all of them. For the seniors I will miss you and wish you all the best. For the rest, tear it up next year and be the role models for the new kids on the block.”

“Since this is my last play, I do want to take this opportunity to say thank you- to the community, the parents and the kids I’ve had the pleasure to work with these last twelve years. It has been my pleasure and I’ve built some wonderful relationships with all of you. I have been so blessed. I only hope and pray that I have touched some lives in a positive way.”
