Finally after completing problems of increase and decrease of sales, we are moving on to using fractions, decimals, and percents in other areas such as probability, comparing which is greater or less, and simple interest.
Seventh and eighth grade math classes have been busy preparing for holiday shopping and how to figure out all those “fantastic” discounts. Percents, fractions, and decimals were all incorporated into our learning of the skills. Working on computing what we would save for different percentage discounts, we also then were able to evaluate whether the sale price was really a super deal. Tax percentages were also added to our sale price to figure the total price. Further challenges included finding the percent of discount they were given if they knew the original cost and the sale price. Vocabulary words galore were utilized to help us in our solving. After vacation students were eager to share an abundance of additional ways we utilized our math talents during the Thanksgiving break.
